LUCCA A53 Pro: Draining the Machine

Whether you're getting your Lucca A53 Pro ready for storage or transport, or you're performing maintenance, draining the machine's boilers is the first step in in many routine projects.

Tools needed:
- Phillips screwdriver
- 7mm wrench
- 16mm wrench
- Measuring cup
- Bucket
- Kitchen towels

NOTE: The machine should be off and cool to the touch before beginning.

NOTE: It's a good idea to set the machine up on a stable work surface before beginning. You may want to lay a towel down to protect both the work surface and the machine.

1. In order to drain the machine, it will first need to be programmed to operate in plumb-in mode (PL), but set up to draw water in tank mode (TA). Follow instructions in this guide to help you accomplish that:

2. Power the machine on and let it start up.

3. Remove the water tank and drip tray.

4. Place the measuring cup under the group head and press the Free Flow button. Allow water to run for 30 seconds or until 8 fl oz has been dispensed from the machine, whichever comes first.

5. Power the machine off and unplug it. See the additional tip at the end of this guide.

6. Carefully tilt the machine on its back to reveal the steam boiler access panel on the bottom.

7. Some machines use two Phillips head screws to hold this panel in place, others use one Phillips head screw and one 7mm retaining nut. In either case, you'll need to remove these two fasteners to access the steam boiler drain.

8. Identify and then remove the steam boiler drain cap with the 16mm wrench. Set the drain plug aside for later.

9. Make sure that the machine is positioned close to the edge of your work surface and place a bucket on the floor in front of the machine.

10. Open the steam boiler drain valve.

11. Now carefully tilt the machine forward over the edge of your work surface. Hold the machine steady over the bucket until water stops flowing from the steam boiler.

12. Tilt your machine back onto its back, close the steam boiler drain valve and reinstall the drain valve plug. If you no longer need access to the steam boiler, replace the access panel.

Additional Tip:

Before draining the steam boiler, remove the top panel from the machine and identify the vacuum breaker valve on top of the steam boiler. Pack folded up towel into the space above the steam boiler to prevent water from leaking out of the vacuum breaker valve while the machine is on its back. Lift the steam wand to open the steam boiler to facilitate easier draining.
