Eureka Mignon Specialita Compatto: User Manual

This manual should contain everything you need to operate, program, and maintain your Eureka Mignon Specialita Compatto espresso grinder.

Before operating your grinder, make sure you have carefully read the Setup Guide.

Getting to Know the Display

The Compatto is controlled from the touch display on the front of the grinder, with grinding started by the microswitch button behind the portafilter fork. The display shows:

  • Single dose (one cup) and double dose (two cups): two programmable timed doses. The selected dose lights up.

  • Time: the programmed grind time for the selected dose, in seconds, to a tenth of a second. After selecting a dose and grinding, it counts down to zero.

  • Plus and minus: raise or lower the time for the selected dose.

  • Continuous mode symbol: appears when both cup icons are selected together, for manual grinding.

Below the display, the height-adjustable fork holds your portafilter under the chute and carries the grind activation button. Pressing the portafilter against it starts the selected dose.

How to Use the Eureka Mignon Specialita Compatto

  1. Make sure the hopper is secured with its set screw, filled with beans, and that the metal shutter at the base of the hopper is pulled open.

  2. Switch the grinder on with the power switch on the back.

  3. Tap the single- or double-dose icon.

  4. Slide your portafilter into the fork and press it back against the activation button. Grinding starts, and the display counts down.

  5. The grinder stops automatically at the end of the programmed time, and the timer resets to your setting.

  6. Remove the portafilter, distribute, tamp, and brew.

The included Mignon Dosing Funnel sits on a 58 mm portafilter. Eureka recommends not grinding more than 160 g in a single grinding session, and the motor is rated for 60 seconds on, followed by a rest. For home espresso, a few consecutive doses are fine.

Pausing and canceling a dose

  • Pause: pull the portafilter away from the activation button, or press it in again, to pause mid-dose. Press it against the button again to finish the remaining time.

  • Cancel: while paused, press and hold the lit dose icon until it blinks. The dose is canceled, and the time resets to your programmed value.

Programming Your Doses

Each dose icon has its own programmed time. A common setup is a single and a double, or a double and a slightly larger double for a different basket. Doses are set in seconds to a tenth of a second.

  1. Tap the dose icon you want to change.

  2. Tap plus or minus to raise or lower the time. Press and hold to move faster.

  3. That is it. The new time is saved as soon as you set it. Grind a dose and weigh it, then adjust until it lands where you want.

The Compatto doses by time, so grind size changes your dose weight. After any grind adjustment, purge a few grams and re-weigh. A new bag of beans can shift the weight, too, so check the first dose from each new coffee.

Locking the dose times

To keep your times from being changed by accident, tap plus and minus at the same time. The plus and minus icons disappear from the display. Tap both again to unlock.

Extra Dose

The Compatto’s display includes Eureka’s Extra Dose function, which lets you add a short burst of grinding to top up a dose that landed a touch light without reprogramming your preset.

Continuous (Manual) Grinding

Tap the single-dose and double-dose icons at the same time. The continuous mode symbol appears, and the grinder runs for as long as the portafilter is pressed against the activation button, up to 60 seconds. Pull the portafilter away to stop. To leave continuous mode, press and hold either dose icon for a few seconds.

Continuous mode is the right tool for purging after a grind change, topping up a dose, and grinding into a dosing cup by eye.

Grind Adjustment

  • Adjust the grind with the Extra-Comfort dial on top of the grinder, while the motor is running. Turning the dial with the burrs stopped can jam them.

  • Clockwise grinds finer. Counter-clockwise grinds coarser.

  • The adjustment is stepless and quite sensitive, so make small moves, grind a little between changes, and pull a shot before moving again. The numbers on the dial are reference points, not fixed steps. Note where you land for each coffee.

  • After a grind change, purge a few grams in continuous mode so the chute and chamber hold coffee at the new setting, then re-weigh your timed doses.

  • Eureka’s adjustment moves the lower burr, so the setting stays put when you open the grinder's top to clean. You will not have to re-dial after a cleaning.

  • If coffee stops coming out, the setting is too fine, or the burrs have jammed. Turn the dial counterclockwise with the motor running to open the burrs.

Dose Counter

The Compatto keeps a running count of single, double, and continuous doses.

  1. With the grinder off, press and hold the activation button behind the fork, then switch the grinder on and keep holding for about 5 seconds.

  2. Tap the single dose icon for the single count, the double dose icon for the double count, or both for the continuous count.

  3. The total displays two digits at a time, in order. A count of 142536, for example, shows 14, then 25, then 36, with a pause before it repeats.

  4. Press the activation button to exit.

Display contrast

With the grinder off, hold the activation button, switch the grinder on, then tap plus or minus to adjust contrast. Adjust with plus and minus, then press the activation button to exit.

Hopper Shutter and Swapping Coffees

The metal shutter at the base of the hopper closes off the bean path. Push it in to close, pull it out to open. Close it to lift the hopper off with beans still in it, swap to a different coffee, or stop beans from dropping while you clean the chute. To empty the burr chamber before a swap, close the shutter and run the grinder in continuous mode until nothing more comes out.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning keeps stale coffee oils out of your cup and keeps the Compatto grinding consistently. Always switch off and unplug the grinder before cleaning, and never reach into the hopper or burr chamber while it is plugged in. Never submerge the grinder, and use only food-safe cleaning products.

Housing and hopper

Wipe the body with a damp cloth or microfiber towel. Remove the hopper (loosen its set screw at the back first) and wash the inside and the lid with warm water and a neutral dish soap to remove coffee oils. Rinse and dry completely before reinstalling. The hopper is not dishwasher safe.

Grinder cleaning tablets

Eureka recommends cleaning tablets for a complete cleaning. We recommend running Cafetto Grinder Cleaner through the Compatto about once a month.

  1. Close the hopper shutter and grind out the beans left in the chamber in continuous mode.

  2. Adjust the grind slightly coarser so the granules can pass through.

  3. Open the shutter, add one dose of grinder cleaner to the hopper, and grind it through into a cup.

  4. Return to your espresso setting, then grind and discard one dose of coffee before brewing.

Cleaning the burrs

Because the grind setting lives in the lower burr, you can open the Compatto for a brush-out without losing your setting.

  1. Switch off and unplug the grinder. Close the hopper shutter, run the chamber empty first if you can, then loosen the hopper fixing screw and lift off the hopper.

  2. Remove the screws holding the top cover and lift it off.

  3. Remove the screws holding the upper burr carrier and lift it out.

  4. Brush the burrs, the carrier, and the chamber with a dry brush or dry cloth. A vacuum helps with the fines.

  5. Reinstall the upper burr carrier and its screws, then the top cover, then the hopper with its fixing screw.

Grind and taste a shot after reassembly. Your setting should be where you left it.

Burr replacement

The Compatto’s 55 mm Diamond Inside burrs are cryogenically treated and rated for about 600 kg of coffee. For a household pulling four shots a day, that is decades. When grind quality or output starts to fall off, contact our tech team for replacement burrs and service.

Troubleshooting

The grinder does not start when I press the portafilter in

  • Make sure a dose icon is lit. Tap one if it is not.

  • Check that the fork is set so the portafilter reaches the activation button. See Step 3 of the Setup Guide.

  • Confirm the power switch on the back is on and the display is lit.

Nothing comes out of the chute

  • Check that the hopper shutter is open.

  • The setting may be too fine. With the motor running, turn the dial counterclockwise a little until coffee flows, then dial back in.

  • A very fine grind with oily beans can pack the chute. Switch off, unplug, close the shutter, clear the chute with a brush, and restart a little coarser.

The grinder stopped mid-dose and will not restart

The motor is thermally protected and will shut down if it overheats, for example, after a long run or a jam. Switch off, unplug, and let it cool. If the burrs jam, open the grind setting and run the motor once it restarts. If it trips again under normal use, contact our tech team.

Doses are drifting in weight

  • Timed doses change with grind size. After any grind adjustment, purge and re-weigh.

  • A new bag of beans can weigh differently even at the same setting.

  • Keep enough beans in the hopper to feed the burrs evenly. A nearly empty hopper slows the flow.

  • If doses have gradually drifted over months with the same coffee, the burrs and chute are due for cleaning.

The plus and minus icons are gone

The dose times are locked. Tap where plus and minus would be, both at the same time, to unlock.
