Before operating your grinder, make sure you have carefully read the Setup Guide.
Getting to Know the EG-1
The EG-1 has just a few controls, and each does one job:
Main power switch (back): turns the grinder on and off completely.
RPM display (front): shows the burr speed setting.
RPM knob: the black knob that sets the burr speed.
Purge button: the button in the center of the RPM knob. It reverse-spins the burrs or gives a burst of maximum speed (see below).
On/Off button: starts and stops the burrs. It lights up and stays pressed in while the burrs are spinning.
Bean Dish (top): where you pour each dose. It is held in place by a magnet and aligned by dowel pins.
Locking ring: lift and turn to adjust the grind.
Upper and lower funnels: together, they form the grind chamber around the 80mm flat burrs. Strong rare earth magnets hold them closed.
Blind Shaker and Platen: the Blind Shaker catches the grounds, and the oak Platen centers it under the chute.
How to Use the EG-1
Make sure the main power switch on the back is on.
Check that the Blind Shaker is seated on the Platen.
Set your RPM with the RPM knob, if you want to change it.
Weigh your beans. If you like, mist them lightly with the RDT bottle and stir.
Press the On/Off button to start the burrs.
Pour the beans into the Bean Dish.
When the grinder goes quiet, press the Purge button for a quick burst of maximum speed to clear the last grounds.
Press the On/Off button to stop the burrs.
Remove the Blind Shaker, shake to break up any clumps, and transfer the grounds to your portafilter or brewer.
Don't leave the grinder running for long periods with no coffee in it.
Hot Start and Cold Start
You can grind with either method:
Hot Start: start the burrs first, then pour in the beans. Weber recommends Hot Start for the EG-1.
Cold Start: pour the beans into the Bean Dish first, then start the burrs.
Whichever you choose, use it consistently, since the method can affect your results.
Adjusting the RPM
Turn the black RPM knob to change the burr speed. Turning it counter-clockwise lowers the speed.
The display shows the RPM for a moment as you turn the knob, so you can preset it without running the grinder.
Weber recommends starting in the 500–700 RPM range.
The EG-1 uses a PID controller that senses how hard your beans are and adjusts motor power in real time to hold your target speed.
Burr speed changes the character of the grind. Once you've dialed in a coffee at one speed, try another and taste the difference. Write down the RPM along with your grind setting.
The Purge Button
The Purge button in the center of the RPM knob does two things, depending on when you press it:
With the burrs stopped: it briefly spins the burrs in reverse, then spins them at maximum speed. This dislodges a stuck bean or foreign object and clears the last grounds from the chamber.
While grinding: it gives a temporary burst of maximum speed. Use it at the end of a dose to push out the last grounds.
Grind Adjustment
Lift the locking ring and turn it to change the grind, then let it settle back into place.
Larger numbers mean a coarser grind. Each tick moves the burrs 5 microns.
Adjust between doses, with the burr chamber empty.
The adjustment is stepped and repeatable. Keep a note of the setting (and RPM) for each coffee and brew method, and you can return to it exactly.
The EG-1 covers everything from Turkish-fine to coarse filter. You can switch between espresso and pour-over without purging or redialing.
When dialing in espresso, make small moves and pull a shot between each change.
If your grind numbers no longer line up with where they used to be (for example, after a burr change), contact our tech team, and we can walk you through recalibrating it.
Burr Sets
The EG-1 accepts two magnetically mounted 80mm burr sets:
CORE: Weber's all-around set, built for everything from espresso to pour-over. Choose CORE if you make espresso.
ULTRA: made for Weber by SSP, these burrs produce minimal fines for the cleanest filter coffee. They are not suitable for espresso.
Weber designed the burr mount so burrs can be swapped and aligned with a 4mm hex tool in about five minutes. If it's your first burr change, contact our tech team, and we'll walk you through it. As with any new burrs, expect your grind settings to shift slightly while they season over the first few kilograms of coffee.
Reducing Static and Clumping
RDT bottle: lightly mist your beans before grinding and stir. A small amount of moisture reduces static, so grounds don't cling to the chute or the Blind Shaker.
Blind Shaker: give it a shake after grinding to break up clumps before the grounds go into your portafilter.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Regular cleaning keeps stale coffee oils out of your cup and keeps the EG-1 grinding consistently. Always turn off the main power switch and unplug the grinder before cleaning, and never put your fingers or tools into the grind chamber while it is plugged in.
Cleaning the grind chamber
The EG-1's grind chamber opens without tools and can be cleaned and resealed in about 30 seconds.
Turn off the main power switch and unplug the grinder.
Remove the upper and lower funnels. Strong rare earth magnets hold them together, so pull them apart firmly and evenly.
Brush out the burrs and the grind chamber with the included rosewood cleaning brush. Wipe the funnels with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
Make sure everything is dry, then reseat the funnels. Check that the magnets pull them fully closed.
Plug the grinder back in, turn it on, and grind and discard a small amount of coffee before brewing.
Housing, Bean Dish, and Blind Shaker
Wipe the housing with a damp cloth as needed. Wipe the Bean Dish and Blind Shaker clean and dry them thoroughly. Never submerge the grinder in water, and don't put any EG-1 parts in the dishwasher.
Wiper blades
Wipers inside the grind chamber sweep grounds toward the chute. Spare wiper blades are included in the box. If grounds start collecting in the chamber, or the wipers look worn, contact our tech team for help replacing them.
Troubleshooting
The burrs are jammed, or a bean is stuck
Press the On/Off button to stop the burrs.
Press the Purge button. The burrs spin briefly in reverse, then at maximum speed, which should dislodge the stuck bean or object.
If the jam doesn't clear, turn off the main power switch, unplug the grinder, and open the grind chamber to inspect it.
The motor slows down or stalls while grinding
Use a Hot Start: get the burrs spinning before you pour in the beans.
Pour the beans in more gradually.
Try a higher RPM, especially for very fine grinds or very light roasts.
Grounds are left in the chute after grinding
Press the Purge button while the burrs are still spinning to give a burst of maximum speed.
Mist your beans with the RDT bottle before grinding to reduce static.
The grinder won't start
Check that the main power switch on the back is on and the RPM display is lit.
Make sure the power cable is pushed fully into the C13 inlet and the outlet is working.
My grind changed after cleaning
Make sure the upper and lower funnels are fully seated and that the magnets hold them closed.
Check that the locking ring settled back into place after your last adjustment, and confirm your grind number.
