Eureka Mignon: Basic Motor Inspection
Use this guide to begin troubleshooting any issues related to your grinder's motor or electrical system; stalling/jamming, burr not spinning, noisy operation etc.
Tools Needed:
- #2 Philips Screwdriver
1. Unplug the grinder, then remove the hopper and clear the grinder of as much bean debris as possible. You may need to use a vacuum or turn the grinder upside down and shake it out.
2. Peek inside the grinder and try spinning the bottom burr with your finger. Take note of whether the bottom burr moves freely, moves with resistance, or does not move at all.
3. Remove the Eureka emblem from the rear of the grinder.
4. Use the #2 Philips screwdriver to remove the screw that holds the top panel in place.
(Note: Try bracing the grinder with one hand, while you press firmly with your screwdriver and turn the screw with the other hand.)
5. Lift the top panel up and out to remove.
6. Remove the screws holding the top burr onto the grind chamber.
7. Try spinning the bottom burr by hand to verify that it spins freely.
You may want to use a vacuum or brush to clear out any built up grounds from inside the grinder at this point.
8. Plug the grinder in and power it on. If your grinder has a touch screen, select manual grind mode.
NOTE: Make sure no loose hair or clothing comes near the grinder.
9. Press the portafilter switch.
- Does the timer on the screen start to count up?
- Does the bottom burr begin to spin freely when the portafilter button is pressed?
- Can you hear any grinding or scraping noises?
- Adjust the grind size by a full turn in either direction and try again each time—does the bottom burr spin when the portafilter button is pressed?
- If the bottom burr does not spin, can you hear a humming or whining noise?
- If the bottom burr does spin with the top burr removed, try re-installing the top burr. Does the bottom burr continue to spin freely with the top burr installed?
The answers to the above questions will help us diagnose potential problems with your grinder's motor or electrical functions.
