Profitec JUMP: User Manual
This manual should contain everything you need to operate and maintain your Profitec JUMP heat exchanger espresso machine.
Please read carefully before operating your heat exchanger or vibratory pump espresso machine. The product page lists specifications, accessories, and other details on the Profitec JUMP.
Getting Started:
After reading through the Profitec JUMP setup guide, test your water. Espresso machines have specific requirements when it comes to water. There are two primary considerations: filtration and hardness. Please carefully read about the importance of water in espresso to understand how water affects your espresso machine. For further learning, check out Coffee School's Water 101
Note: It's essential to test your water, filter, and soften to obtain 35-85 ppm to avoid scale and damage to your machine. RO (reverse osmosis) or distilled water does not contain enough mineral content and could cause issues with your machine. The SCA Water for Brewing Standards explains what's needed to obtain water suitable for your machine and coffee.
Technical Details:
Please look at the spec table on our product page for a complete list of technical details.
When you're ready to start pulling shots, check out our Espresso 101 section to learn about steaming milk, latte art, our suggested starter espresso recipe, grinder dial-in tips, and much more!
Changing the Brew Temperature:
The 3-way temperature switch under the machine allows you to adjust the brew temperature of the JUMP before pulling a shot or during use. The preset temperatures for the JUMP are I (low), II (medium), and III (high), which are great for dark, medium, and light roasts, respectively. The below temperatures may vary depending on operating time and ambient temperature. Since the machine is a heat exchanger, the brew water is heated indirectly by the boiler; you must flush water (known as a cooling flush through the group head) for several seconds before pulling your espresso shot.
- Position I—120°C/248°F corresponds to a brewing temperature of 90°C/194°F
- Position II—124°C/255.2°F corresponds to a brewing temperature of 94°C/201.2°F
- Position III—128°C/262.4°F corresponds to a brewing temperature of 98°C//208.4°F*
*Note that we only recommend position III for increased steam pressure, not for most espresso extractions.
ECO Mode:
ECO mode is set to 90 minutes by default for energy-saving purposes. The machine will begin heating down. A dot moves across the display, indicating that the machine is in ECO mode. You can wake it up again by lifting the brew lever up and down.
Here's how to deactivate ECO mode:
- Ensure the machine is OFF and that the water reservoir is at least halfway full of water.
- Move the brew lever up all the way as though you are pulling a shot.
- Ensure that the 3-way temperature switch is set to the middle position (position II).
- Turn the machine on, and the PID display will read PI.
- Pull down the brew lever, and the PID will read ECO. You have 5 Seconds to change the setting.
- Set the switch to the rear position (position III) and then back to the middle position (position II).
- The PID display will read the messages ECO and ON. The machine will return to normal operation after a few seconds.
Activating Pre-Infusion:
Pre-infusion is meant to saturate the entire puck of coffee with water at a low pressure before full pressure is applied to the coffee. This influences even extraction and better-tasting espresso. Pre-infusion is inactive by default; follow these steps to activate pre-infusion on the Profitec JUMP.
- Set the 3-way switch to the front position (position I) and then back to the middle position (position II).
- The PID will now read PI and ON.
- Pull the brew lever all the way down. The PID will read ECO for 5 seconds.
To reactivate pre-infusion, please refer to the manufacturer's manual.
Pump Pressure Adjustment:
- To access the pump pressure adjustment screw, first remove the cup warming tray. The expansion valve adjustment screw is located on the right top panel.
- To set the pump pressure, replace your portafilter basket with the backflush basket and lock it into the group head.
- Raise the brew lever and then wait a few seconds for the pressure to rise. After the pressure has risen, use a flathead screwdriver to turn the expansion valve adjustment screw.
- Turning clockwise will increase the pressure, and counterclockwise will decrease the pressure. The recommended setting with the back flush in is about 9-10 bar pressure.
