E61 Gicleur Inspection and Cleaning (Two-tiered Cap)
No flow or low flow from your machine's E61 group head? Start by making sure the gicleur aka jet is clear and free of obstructions.
Tools Needed:
- Large Adjustable Wrench
- 7mm wrench OR 7mm deep socket OR 7mm nut driver
- Tweezers
- Shop towel or hand towel
- Espresso machine cleaning solution, e.g. Biocaf, Cafiza
*Make sure your espresso machine is unplugged and cool to the touch before beginning.
NOTE: There are two common styles of E61 mushroom found on E61 group heads, this guide demonstrates how to inspect and two-tiered style E61 mushrooms. If your machine has a single cap E61 mushroom, follow this guide instead:
E61 Gicleur Inspection and Cleaning (Single Cap)
How to inspect and clean a two-tiered cap E61 mushroom:
1. Using the large adjustable wrench, unscrew the upper cap from the E61 group head and set it aside.
It can be helpful to drape a towel over the group head to prevent damaging the finish.
2. Look down into the top of the E61 mushroom and identify the gicleur and the mesh gicleur screen.
3. Use your fingers or a pair of tweezers to remove the gicleur filter screen from the group head.
4. Now that the gicleur is all on its own in there, use the 7mm hex driver or the 7mm deep socket and ratchet to unscrew the gicleur from the group head.
You may need to use the tweezers to pop the gicleur out of the group head once it's fully unscrewed.
5. Make sure that there's nothing obstructing the gicleur. You can soak the gicleur and the filter screen in hot soapy water to loosen any debris.
6. You may need to use an implement like a piece of wire or plastic filament to make certain that the gicleur is clear and free of build up.
7. Use these instructions in reverse to put everything back together.
NOTE: Be careful not to over-tighten the gicleur in the group head. It is delicate and could break off. It only needs to be hand tight.
